Gaming is top activity in terms of entertainment, above using chat applications, interacting in social networks, watching TV or listening to music.

Recognized gaming specialist group Newzoo presented an analysis on the Millennial generation and its relationship with video gaming. The data came from the company’s annual gamer consumer insights research, and includes players from 33 markets.

Some interesting information can be shared here. The average amount of time that Millennial gamers spend playing games per week is 6 hours and 50 minutes. A large share of them is willing to spend money; 70% spent money on games on any platform in the last six months. Gaming is popular among both men and women, with women making up 45% of all the Millennial gamer group.

For this generation, gaming today means a lot more than just playing. Socializing, viewing, and community engagement are also huge parts of the pastime. In fact, 71% of Gen Z gamers watch game-related videos and streams. The gaming content they watch the most is gameplay, comedic gaming videos, and their favorite streamers.

Millennials engage with gaming in many ways outside of just gameplay (77% of them said they play video games). This includes viewing game-related content, discussing the latest developments in community spaces, listening to podcasts, and talking about video games with their friends. Besides, 67% of them both play and watch VGs. Considering this, 71% of these gamers watch game-related videos and streams. The gaming content they watch the most is gameplay, comedic gaming videos, and their favorite streamers. In terms of motivations to play games, unwind, achievement, and competition are the most commonly listed factors.

They usually play via mobile (73%), PC (63%) and console (54%). About mobile, Newzoo offered a study in which the company anticipated mobile gaming will bring in USD 116 billion in 2024. In this sense, the market intelligence firm expects 11.2% CAGR from 2019 through 2024. This year, the company says worldwide mobile gaming market will be of USD 90.7 billion. Growth of spending on mobile games is set to outpace the growth of the mobile gaming audience, as Newzoo is only projecting 6.1% CAGR for the number of smartphone users around the world over the same five-year stretch. This year’s total is projected to be 3.9 billion smartphone users, with that number rising to 4.5 billion in 2024.
