Puerto Rico: New casinos combine luxury, innovation, and a touch of the Caribbean charm

Thanks to positive regulatory changes, a surge of investment in the island’s land-based gaming industry has sparked the development of new properties. The fusion of entertainment, culture, and sustainability within these establishments expresses a local commitment to creating memorable experiences for visitors.

Fairfield El Tropical Casino, Bonvoyage Casino, Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino, and Foxwoods El San Juan Casino are some of the latest gaming offerings to local and international bettors.

By Damian Martinez, journalist at G&M News.

Back in February 2022, the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission granted the first sports betting operator license to the Casino del Mar at the La Concha Resort and, in consequence, the island emerged from the challenges of the past and looked for a brighter future. The Commission also approved the first online sports betting operation, starting a new phase of this industry on the island.

Since then, local Government has been collecting important sums from sports bets made by players. What came next was a surge of investment in the gaming industry that has sparked the development of new casinos that blend luxury, innovation, and a touch of the Caribbean charm. These establishments aren’t just places to try your luck, but immersive experiences designed to captivate visitors and locals alike.

NEW ROOMS AND RENOVATIONS

Thanks to the regulatory changes, in October 2023, the socioeconomic development of the eastern region of Puerto Rico and its tourism industry were strengthened with the opening of the Fairfield by Marriott Luquillo Beach Hotel & El Tropical Casino in Luquillo, generating more than 185 direct new jobs that will benefit the area. The property is the first Fairfield by Marriott hotel in the Caribbean.

Located in front of the Luquillo Spa in Playa la Fortuna, and its famous kiosks, the complex has a 104-room hotel and a casino, built after an investment of over USD 45 million. It also has various amenities and facilities that will support the newly designated gastronomic route.

Also in the same month last year, the Bonvoyage Casino was inaugurated at the Aloft Ponce Hotel. This undoubtedly boosted the tourist and economic development of the island. The new San Juan entertainment center -with an approximate area of 12,000 square feet of construction- has 357 state-of-the-art slot machines and seven gaming tables (two roulette tables and five blackjack tables). The space is distributed between two huge rooms with a VIP area, a terrace for smokers, and a spacious bar with a complete range of cocktails, wines, and beers.

During last April, the Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino announced a million-dollar renovation of all its facilities, as part of the celebration of its 15 years in the market. From the hall to its 69 rooms, including the colonial rooms of the Sauri house, every corner of the historic property that adorns the Plaza Las Delicias de Ponce has been renovated to provide an unparalleled experience to all guests and visitors of the Puerto Rican city.

The Plaza Casino located within the property was also renovated. Now, it has about 16,500 square feet to offer more services, entertainment, and fun. This time focused on solidifying and improving the experience for existing partners and creating new opportunities for a younger market that includes the return of the Viva Casino Bar and the integration of sports betting.

SERVICES AND AMENITIES

Moreover, at the end of 2022, Casino Metro, one of Puerto Rico’s largest entertainment venue, opened its sportsbook with Caesars Sportsbook. The retail sportsbook had three betting windows and 12 self-service betting kiosks for customers to place wagers. The renovated space features more than 25 LED TVs and odds boards to bring guests the ultimate sports viewing experience.

Also in 2022, and sensing the new regulatory winds, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and LionGrove launched the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino, located at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. The property required a capital investment of USD 12,5 million and has created over 150 direct jobs.

Since its opening, Foxwoods El San Juan Casino has welcomed thousands of guests ready to experience hundreds of the newest slot machines, top table games and first-class services that complement the resort’s well-appointed luxury accommodations and amenities.

As Puerto Rico’s land-based casino landscape continues to evolve, these new establishments are contributing not only to the island’s economic growth, but also to the diversification of its tourism offerings. The fusion of entertainment, culture, and sustainability within these casinos showcases Puerto Rico’s commitment to creating memorable experiences for visitors while preserving the natural beauty and vibrant spirit that define the Caribbean jewel.
