U.S.: Nevada sets new gaming revenue record with USD 1.32 billion in May 2024

Las Vegas Strip’s 3.7% revenue jump in May wasn’t fueled by high-end baccarat play, but by slot machines, table games and sportsbooks. In fact, for the year 2024, revenue from sports betting is up 5.6% versus the same period of 2023. Besides, the Strip continued to benefit from a strong events calendar that boosted hotel occupancy and room rates. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) reported 3.65 million visitors in May, a 4.6% increase over May 2023.

With five months in the books, Nevada’s casino industry is trending toward a fourth consecutive revenue record-breaking year.

According to a report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Las Vegas Strip resorts informed gaming revenue of USD 742.5 million in May (+3.7% or USD 26.6 million). The state’s overall gaming revenue was USD 1.32 billion, a record for the month and up 2.5% (USD 31.6 million) from the same time last year. May marked the state’s 39th straight month with at least USD 1 billion in gaming revenue and the eighth-largest single-month total. For the year, total win is up 3.2% or USD 202 million in comparison to the first five months of 2023.

Strip casinos saw USD 402.9 million (+2.6% or USD 10.1 million) from slot machine revenue. Baccarat revenue on the Strip declined almost 7% to USD 122.1 million, while wagering fell 2.4% to USD 758.1 million. The Strip’s games win totaled USD 339.5 million and increased 5.1% or USD 16.4 million and drop grew 4.9% or USD 100 million. Games hold percentage was 15.8% versus 15.7% last year.

Local casinos generated USD 277.7 million in revenue in May, up 5.1% year over year. Revenue was up 10.3% for the second quarter compared to a year ago. Downtown casinos had USD 74.8 million, up 1.6% over USD 73.6 million in May 2023. North Las Vegas had USD 24.7 million, up 2.1% over last year.

The Strip revenue figures came amid Harry Reid International Airport reporting its second highest single-month total ever recorded in passenger count with 5.2 million people in May.

Besides, the Strip continued to benefit from a strong events calendar that boosted hotel occupancy and room rates. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) reported 3.65 million visitors in May, a 4.6% increase over May 2023’s 3.49 million.

The strong event schedule helped fill hotel rooms; overall occupancy was 86.1%, up from 84.4% a year ago. Weekend occupancy was 93.4%, up from 93.2%. Strip occupancy hit 88.5%, up from 87%. The average daily room rate on the Strip was USD 212, up 9% from USD 194 a year ago, according to the LVCVA.

Statewide revenue figures were mixed. Statewide gaming revenue through May 2024 was up 3.2% and the Strip was up 3.5%. Statewide, Nevada sportsbooks won USD 36 million, up 19.8% or USD 6 million compared to May 2023 on a hold percentage of 7% versus 5.7% last year. Sportsbook wagers totaled USD 515.1 million, down 2.3% or USD 12 million compared to last May. Mobile wagers totaled USD 351.2 million, down 1.9% or USD 6.7 million.

Statewide slot win of USD 886.1 million increased 1% or USD 8.5 million and coin-in of USD 12.3 billion was up USD 501.2 million or 4.2%. Slot hold percentage was 7.19% versus 7.43% last year. Statewide table, counter, and card games win of USD 434.3 million increased 5.6% or USD 23.1 million and games drop of USD 2.9 billion increased 4.8% or USD 132.6 million from May 2023. Volumes totaled USD 217.6 million and increased 24.9% or USD 43.3 million. Hold percentage was 20.29% versus 17.37% last year.
