Can you tell us about your role in LGBTQ+ in Gaming and how the group promotes diversity in the industry?
At G2E in Las Vegas last year, I was on a panel with other LGBTQ+ leaders and allies. We discussed how LGBTQ+ professionals bring value to organizations and discussed the important role of allies and advocates who support the LGBTQ+ community. After the panel, a few of us connected and realized that we wanted the energy and excitement of the panel to continue and grow, so we created LGBTQ+ in Gaming with the support of the American Gaming Association. Our industry understands the importance of diversity because our guests come from all walks of life. This group brings us all together to connect, to learn from each other, and to drive innovation as we move into the future. The value of diversity, and the value we hope to bring with this group, is to demonstrate the power we have when we consider our differences, so we can create and execute innovative visions for the future of our industry and our world.
Many people in Latin America and beyond want to get involved in DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts. How can they join or support groups like LGBTQ+ in Gaming?
Everyone can join us on our LinkedIn page and read about our online experiences, including our first webinar, ‘Creating Inclusive Communities,’ which took place yesterday. We are a global community and welcome everyone. You don’t have to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community to join us. This group is for everyone.
What are the biggest challenges the gaming and hospitality industries face regarding LGBTQ+ inclusion, and how can companies address them?
I think our industry is uniquely courageous in driving inclusivity and welcoming all. There is always room to grow. Whether you are new to this space, or been working at this for a while, ensure you make time to connect to the LGBTQ+ professionals around you and learn from them. Ask how their experience is, and their view about what is lacking in our sector. If you don’t have anyone among you that is out as part of the community, that is a clear message about the work you have to do. I’ve been very lucky and am surrounded by leaders who value my input as an LGBTQ+ professional. When we make spaces for all voices at the table and leverage that collective knowledge to drive inclusion and innovation, organizations and the whole industry flourish.
What are your key goals for LGBTQ+ in Gaming and the future of inclusivity in the sector?
Yesterday, we were very happy with the executives’ participation at our first LGBTQ+ in Gaming Webinar in partnership with the American Gaming Association, and I’m motivated and excited by the future in this industry. Every connection we make, through LGBTQ+ in Gaming and beyond, brings me hope that our industry will continue to set the standard for innovation and inclusion around the globe.
