Ernie Stevens Jr (IGA). A steady growth for tribal gaming, with a focus on diversification

In this exclusive interview, the Chairman of the Indian Gaming Association expresses his enthusiasm for the tradeshow that will be returning to the Anaheim Convention Center (California, US) on April 8-11th. He also speaks about the reasons for the evolution of the Indian communities, and assures that, in regulatory matters, it’s essential to advance on issues such as the clarification of the Wire Act, the modernization of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), and tribal sovereignty recognition.

The leader is confident that the tenacity, resilience, entrepreneurship, and sheer hard work of tribal gaming stakeholders will continue to drive the responsible, sustainable success that they have achieved.

By Damian Martinez, journalist at G&M News.

What are your expectations for this year’s IGA Tradeshow and Convention in Anaheim?

We’re tremendously excited about the IGA Tradeshow and Convention in Anaheim this year. We expect a record-breaking turnout, with attendees from across the tribal gaming industry eager to connect, share best practices, and explore the latest innovations. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the ever-growing economic impact of tribal gaming and its positive contributions to tribal communities. Reflecting current trends and with an eye on the future, we’ve introduced the DigitalPlay Summit (DPS), a new opportunity to connect the expertise of the United States tribal and commercial operators with stakeholders from the world of online sports betting and iGaming sectors. Within DPS will be the Sustainable Gambling Zone (SGZ), another new section that will showcase tribal gaming’s adherence to player protection. Inspired by an award-winning initiative at ICE London, previously known as the Consumer Protection Zone, the SGZ will be the focal point to collaborate, exchange best practices, learn about the latest research, and discover innovations in responsible gambling and sustainability. We’ve got one of the biggest lineups of leading brands exhibiting and supporting the event ever, including DraftKings, FanDuel, and lots of renowned providers. With this kind of backing and the presence of visitors and decision-makers from across the globe, I do not doubt that Anaheim will be the place to be in the United States this April.

What can you tell us about your view on the current state of the US tribal gaming market?

The US tribal gaming market is currently experiencing a period of steady growth. We’re seeing a focus on diversification, with tribes expanding beyond traditional casino offerings to include entertainment experiences, hospitality ventures, and even Esports arenas. This diversification is crucial for long-term success and reflects the evolving preferences of today’s consumers. We’re also perceiving increased investment in resorts, upgrading and renovating to service the augmented footfall and a raising embrace of new technology on casino floors to aid that growth. There remain challenges to be overcome, but that’s no different to any other industry. We’re confident that our tenacity, resilience, entrepreneurship, and sheer hard work will continue to drive the responsible, sustainable success that tribal gaming has become synonymous with.

What regulatory changes are tribal operators looking for?

Tribal operators are seeking a regulatory environment that fosters innovation and growth while ensuring responsible gaming practices. Key areas of focus include: a) Clarification of the Wire Act: clearer definitions regarding online gaming and sports betting would allow tribes to participate in these growing markets on a level playing field; b) Modernization of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA): IGRA was enacted in 1988, and some provisions require updates to reflect the current realities of the gaming industry, and c) Tribal Sovereignty Recognition: ensuring tribal sovereignty over gaming operations remains paramount for the continued success of the industry.

How do you imagine the future for the Indian communities that operate casinos?

The future of Indian gaming is bright. With a continued focus on innovation, diversification, and responsible gaming practices, tribal gaming will remain a significant economic driver for tribal communities and a cornerstone of the US gaming industry. We’re also optimistic about the potential for growth in new areas like online gaming and Esports when clear regulations are established. Stakeholders must understand and respect the ethos and principles of how our industry operates so that there can be mutual trust as the bedrock of any implementation of online sports betting and casino. We’ve grown from nothing to the multi-billion dollar sector that exists today, so we have confidence and faith in how we operate. With the right education and partners, we do not doubt that a mutually beneficial route to online growth can be achieved while complimenting the incredible locations that we’re so proud of today.
