In a challenging 2020, the multiple waves of COVID-19 affected the proceedings of various competitions, making it harder to control lower level tournaments to ensure their integrity.

During the calendar year of 2020, the GLMS has alerted or reported 126 matches to its partners, sending a total of 162 alerts on these matches. The alerts mainly concerned football (110 alerts). Some of the alerts were also sent to FIFA, UEFA, local Gaming Authorities and other local and international law enforcement authorities. The rest of the alerts were sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Esports Integrity Coalition (ESIC), Swiss Lottery and Betting Board (COMLOT) and the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU). Besides, 58 detailed integrity reports were prepared for members or partners upon request. This data has been presented in the recent ‘2020 Annual Monitoring & Intelligence Report’ of the GLMS, the state lotteries’ mutualized monitoring system on sports betting that aims at detecting and analyzing suspicious betting activities that could question the integrity of a sport competition.

Other important info from the study determines that, from a total of 1,113 alerts generated in 2020, 832 (74.75%) belong to football, followed by basketball (135, 12.13%), ice hockey (55, 4.94%), tennis (50, 4.49%), U.S. football (11, 0.98%), Esports (10, 0.9%), volleyball (10, 0.9%) and other sports (baseball, handball, table tennis, badminton and sepak). Regarding the timing of generation of theses alerts, 936 were created before the start of the matches, 27 alerts were generated based on in-play odds changes and 150 alerts were triggered after the end of the matches. About continents, Europe is the region with more alerts (727, a 65.32%, with 559 football alerts). Then, there is Asia (191 alerts, 17.16%), South America (90, 8.09%), North America (64, 5.75%), Africa (23, 2.07%), International (11, 0.99%) and Oceania (7, 0.63%).

When considering main reasons that triggered the alerts, the GLMS notifies about team related news (402 alerts), significant odds changes (192), wrong opening price (140), odds changes that need further investigation (114), requests (83), ), suspicious odds changes (57), motivation (52), member info (44), structure of tournament (10), partner information (7), betfair volume (6), rumors of match fixing (5) and dangerous fixture (1).

The report also contains main GLMS’ highlights from last year, namely educational activities such as a global webinar with World Lottery Association and European Lotteries, as well as projects including Integrisport and Integriball, and policy work with the Council of Europe and the EU.

Building on six years of experience with the establishment in 2009 of ELMS with European Lotteries, the GLMS went global in January 2015, extending the network to other continents. Currently, the group has three Monitoring Hubs in Hong Kong, Denmark and Canada. The GLMS facilitates the sharing of sports betting information as part of the collective efforts of its members in ensuring sports integrity globally, and is dedicated to effective cooperation with all key stakeholders: regulators, law enforcement authorities, and sports organizations.
