Maurizio Soccodato (Global Lab). Creating a new concept of a testing lab for the gambling sector

We have interviewed the CEO of the company, which has in increasing presence in Latin America. In the article, the executive raises the need to develop a closer relationship with clients, as well as with regulators in the region. He also stresses the value of educating the industry on the stages of certification, and believes that the regulatory processes for iGaming and sports betting on this continent are heading in the right direction.

Global Lab is currently working in Puerto Rico, as well as in Argentina (with LOTBA, the Lottery of Buenos Aires City). Besides, the firm has requested authorities the approval to offer its services in the Mendoza Province.

What is the Global Lab’s strategy to increase brand awareness internationally?

Our plan is to be present all around the world. The main strategy is to create a different concept of a gaming testing lab. I’ve been working in the industry for 15, 20 years, more or less. During this time, I was able to understand needs and respond to demands of operators and providers. We have created a platform developed internally where we can manage all of the certification processes of the industry. In terms of LatAm, we start working here two years ago. We have a testing lab in the region both for land-based and iGaming. We also offer other services, like ISO 27001, full security assessment. We are working together with LOTBA (Buenos Aires City lottery in Argentina) and we are starting to request the approval in the Mendoza province. Besides, we are present in Puerto Rico. Our intention is to expand in LatAm.

Based on your experience in Europe, how would you compare European to Latin American gambling regulation? What is lacking in LatAm in this sense?

In Argentina, for instance, I see LOTBA as a good regulator. They are going in the right way. I think that they have learned a lot from European regulators. Currently, I consider that, in general, LatAm is following the correct path so, for me, there are not many differences between these jurisdictions and countries like Italy, UK or Spain.

From my point of view, certification companies are key actors in the sector, since they have to work together with regulators, operators and providers. They also have to know a lot about different legislations. What are the main responsibilities of your company, after having to be in constant contact with all the gaming industry’s stakeholders?

We have a great deal of responsibility, and to be alert to find problems and help companies solve them. In LatAm, both operators and providers should be much more aware about the security of their systems and infrastructures, in terms of checking lists that should be followed. They should really have much more information about the security processes to be in compliance with currents regulations, depending on the country.

How important is to constantly educate gaming operators?

Awareness is important, indeed. Our obligation is to support the industry and be there where and when they need us. For instance, in LatAm, we are doing things totally different from our competitors by sharing with the clients the complete process of certification. We offer the checklist for the regulation to be sure that they understand before to start how the certification process works. We are here to assist clients to efficiently respond to the increasing requirements from regulators.

The team of Global Lab in Sagse.

About Sagse LatAm, which have been your company’s goals for this event?

We are already working with clients in LatAm, but the emphasis is that they can change their concept of a gaming testing lab. It’s not about ordering them what to do. It’s about supporting them on each and every step of the way for they can finally get as quick as possible the certification results they need. I mean we immediately share the checklist, all the data. We don’t make them waste their time waiting until we give them the result of the test. So during Sagse LatAm show, we presented our platform to the attendees. We received lots of consults. It was a very positive event to us.

How do you see the advancement of iGaming and sports betting regulation in territories such as Brazil, Chile and Peru?

They are at different levels. Brazil and Chile are debating lots of issues, with the bills still in discussion in their respective Parliaments. In Peru, they are more advanced, with Mincetur elaborating the final regulation of the law. I see a greater consensus in this country. For us, as a testing lab, it’s always difficult to directly connect with local regulators. It would be better for all stakeholders if we could have a closer relationship with regulators to better understand their policies and help our clients to be prepared to new regulations. It is an issue in which we must move forward, and we will work to achieve it, in LatAm and in the rest of the world.
