A MARKET OF UNSTOPPABLE PROGRESS
There is no doubt that Portugal is one of the European territories with the greatest evolution when it comes to gaming. In land-based gaming, there are 12 casinos and 1 gaming machine room operating across the country, which are located in various gaming areas. Likewise, there are 17 companies licensed to operate online gaming and sports betting, as well as several bingo properties.
Throughout 2023, the industry has experienced double-digit growth quarter after quarter. As an example, recent report shared by the regulator, the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ) informed a record performance in the 3rd quarter of 2023.
According to the main data, revenue from the land-based gaming segment (slot machines, casino games and bingo) amounted to €76.1 million, an increase of 14% compared to Q3 2022. In the same trend, online gaming revenue in Portugal reached a new quarterly high of €215.3 million in the third quarter of 2023 (a 36% increase compared to Q3 2022), helped by record numbers from the iGaming segment. Consumers spent €3.65 billion on online gambling (slots, French roulette, blackjack and more) in the third quarter, an increase of 47.2%. Meanwhile, around 205,200 new online registrations were reported during the quarter, +7.8% compared to the previous quarter.
